That's about 10 min of walking, and 31 to 51 active calories for adults from 150 to 250 lb.
How many miles is 1,000 steps for your height?
Taller people take longer steps, so the same count covers more ground. A faster walk makes every step longer too, which is why pace changes the answer more than height does. In kilometers, 1,000 steps is about 0.7 km on a walk and 0.6 km through the day.
| Height | Through the day2 mph | On a walk3 mph | On a fast walk4 mph |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 ft 0 in | 0.3 mi | 0.4 mi | 0.5 mi |
| 5 ft 4 in | 0.3 mi | 0.4 mi | 0.5 mi |
| 5 ft 8 in | 0.4 mi | 0.4 mi | 0.5 mi |
| 6 ft 0 in | 0.4 mi | 0.5 mi | 0.6 mi |
| 6 ft 4 in | 0.4 mi | 0.5 mi | 0.6 mi |
How long does it take to walk 1,000 steps?
About 10 min at 3 mph, and 10 min on a fast walk at 4 mph. Each extra 1,000 steps adds about 10 minutes at 3 mph.
How many calories does 1,000 steps burn?
| Weight | Through the day2 mph | On a walk3 mph | On a fast walk4 mph |
|---|---|---|---|
| 150 lb | 24 | 31 | 40 |
| 200 lb | 32 | 41 | 53 |
| 250 lb | 40 | 51 | 67 |
Those are active calories, what the walk adds to what your body burns at rest anyway. Counting rest, the total for someone who weighs 200 lb is about 56 on a walk and 49 through the day. If you track calories, add only the active part. Your daily burn already counts rest, so the total would count it twice.
Is 1,000 steps a lot?
Not much. US adults average about 8,800 steps a day on a wrist tracker4, so 1,000 is about 10% of that. It’s a light day. A short walk after a meal is an easy way to add to it.
Why do other sites say 0.5 miles?
Many sites divide by 2,000 steps a mile. That rule fits a fast walk at 4 mph by someone about 5 ft 5 in tall. At 3 mph your steps are shorter, so 1,000 of them cover about 0.5 miles, and about 0.4 through the day. The calculator shows how many steps a mile takes at each height and pace.

In Fit Shapes there's no math to do. It doesn't count steps. Your phone or watch already records active energy in Apple Health or Health Connect, which covers your walking and everything else you do, and Fit Shapes adds that to your resting burn. Then once a week, Adaptive Targets compares the whole burn with what you ate and how your weight moved.
