The best smart scale for most people is the Wyze Scale X. It costs about $40, it weighs you accurately, and its app saves each weigh-in to Apple Health. That last part matters more than anything on the box.
I’ve been serious about tracking my weight since I wrestled in high school, and the habit never left. Since 2015, I’ve used three smart scales, two from Withings and now a Wyze Scale X. The scale is the easy part. What matters is whether your weigh-ins reach the apps you use.
Three scales since 2015
I bought a Withings Body Cardio in November 2015. Nokia bought Withings the next year and sold it back to one of its founders in 2018, and the scale kept weighing me through both. In 2022, I upgraded to the Withings Body Comp when it went on sale. Both were excellent scales.
The Body Comp didn’t wear out. I leaned it against the wall while I cleaned, it fell, and the glass cracked. I replaced it with the Wyze Scale X.
Two things matter to me in a smart scale. Does it weigh me the same way every morning? And do my weigh-ins reach the apps I use?
The best smart scale for most people
The Wyze Scale X does both, for about $40. It runs on four AAA batteries that Wyze says last up to 22 months. It shows your weight and body fat on the glass, and the app adds 11 more estimates, from muscle mass to body water. Up to eight people can share one scale. Wirecutter found it accurate and consistent, and made it their top pick.
The catch is Bluetooth. The scale keeps your weigh-ins until you open the Wyze app, then sends them all at once. If I go a week without opening it, that week’s weigh-ins all arrive together. Nothing is lost. It just doesn’t sync right away.
The best Wi-Fi smart scale
A Wi-Fi scale fixes that. The Withings Body Smart sends each weigh-in to the Withings app over your home network, so it shows up even if your phone is in another room. It costs about $130.
If you want more data, the Withings Body Comp is the one I used from 2022 until it cracked. It adds visceral fat, a vascular age estimate and a few more readings. Fit Shapes reads only your weight and body fat, so the extras stay in the Withings app. Either one is the scale I’d pick if sync were free.
For a new Withings account, it isn’t.
Withings now charges new accounts to sync
If you make a Withings account on or after October 13, 2026, Withings needs a paid Withings+ membership to send your data to Apple Health or Health Connect. Without it, your weigh-ins stay in the Withings app. Any app that reads from Apple Health or Health Connect—Fit Shapes included—never sees them.
Withings+ costs about $100 a year. That’s close to the price of a Body Smart, every year.
Accounts made before that date keep free sync. Withings says they “will never need to worry about this change”. The rule follows your account, not the scale. So if you already have a Withings account, sign in with it when you set up a new scale. Don’t make a new one.
If you’re new to Withings and still want Wi-Fi, look at the Garmin Index S2. Garmin’s app saves weigh-ins to Apple Health, and to Health Connect on Android 14 or later, with no membership. I haven’t used one, so I can’t vouch for it the way I can for the Wyze.
The best smart scale for Android
On Android, Fit Shapes reads your weigh-ins from Health Connect, so the scale’s app has to save them there. Plenty of scale apps still say Google Fit in their settings. That’s a different service, and Fit Shapes can’t read it.
The Wyze Scale X is my pick here too. Wyze lists Health Connect among the apps it syncs with. When you set it up, check that the Wyze app offers Health Connect, not just Google Fit. The Garmin Index S2 is the Wi-Fi option on Android as well.
Are smart scales accurate?
For weight, yes. For body fat, not really.
In a 2021 study, doctors at a Paris hospital weighed patients on a smart scale right after a DEXA scan, the gold standard for body composition. One of the three scales they tested was my old Withings Body Cardio. Its weight was off by a median of 0.25 kg, about half a pound. Its body fat was off by a median of 3.7 kg, about 8 pounds, and it read low. Its muscle mass read about 4 kg high. For years, my scale had been flattering me. The authors concluded that smart scales “are not accurate for body composition”.
That’s not a Withings problem. A smart scale estimates body fat by sending a small current from one foot to the other, and water carries it. So the number moves with how hydrated you are, not just with how much fat you carry. A review of the method found it works best in healthy people whose hydration is steady, and said changes over time “must be interpreted with caution”.
The best scale for body composition
There isn’t one you stand on in the bathroom. Every scale in this post estimates body fat, and the estimate can be off by several pounds of fat in either direction.
What a scale can do is show direction. If you weigh in at the same time each morning and your body fat reading drifts down over a couple of months, you’re probably losing fat. If you want a real number, book a DEXA scan, and treat the scale’s figure as a rough guide between scans.
How to weigh in
Weigh in every morning, after the bathroom and before you eat or drink. Wear the same thing each time, or nothing. Keep the scale in one spot on a hard, flat floor, because a rug or an uneven tile can throw it off.
Then ignore any single reading. Your weight moves from one day to the next with water, salt and the food still in your gut. The trend over a week or two is what tells you something.
Daily weigh-ins help with that. In a 2013 study of 91 adults with overweight, one group got a smart scale and was asked to weigh in every day for six months. They weighed in about six days a week and lost 6.5% of their body weight on average. The other group lost almost nothing. The program also sent weekly emails and lessons, so the scale wasn’t the only thing that changed—but daily weighing was the core of it.
Smart scales in Fit Shapes
Fit Shapes reads your weight and body fat from Apple Health on iPhone, and from Health Connect on Android. It never connects to a scale directly. Any scale whose app saves weigh-ins there works.
Each weigh-in goes into your Trend Weight, which moves 10% of the way toward each day’s reading. A heavy morning nudges it. A real change moves it over a week or two. Your weekly check-in uses that trend, not any single day, to adjust your targets.
Use a smart scale covers setup for Withings and Wyze, step by step. And if you’d rather not buy a scale, you can log your weight by hand.
Fit Shapes has no partnership with Wyze, Withings, Garmin or Amazon, and earns nothing from these links.
