Noom and MyFitnessPal both log your food and your weight, and both set a daily calorie goal. But they’re different products. Think of Noom as a weight-loss course. You read short lessons each day, and the food log is one part of the program. MyFitnessPal is a food log, with a free plan that does the basics. So the real question is whether you want the lessons.

Lessons and coaching

Noom Weight is what Noom calls its paid program, and the lessons are the center of it. Each day, it gives you lessons on habits and the psychology of eating. They’re short reads, or you can listen to them, and they build into mini-courses that you can go back to and retake. Around the lessons sit a food log, a weight graph, step tracking, and Welli, an AI chat for general questions.

A one-on-one coach costs extra. In the US, Premium adds one to Noom Weight, along with personal meal and exercise plans, as a second charge. The coach checks in on day 3, then weekly, and replies within 24 hours on business days. Noom is clear about the limits. Coaches can’t give medical advice, aren’t licensed nutrition professionals, and can’t change your calorie goal.

MyFitnessPal is a tracker. You log food and exercise against a calorie goal and macro goals, and there are no lessons. Premium’s Coach is an AI chat that reads your diary and goals. It suggests what to eat with the calories you have left, finds recipes, and answers nutrition questions. It’s on iPhone, in English, in six countries. It can’t log food for you, change your goals, or see your weight history.

Noom also runs Noom Med, which prescribes GLP-1 medication through telehealth. It’s a separate program with its own pricing, and this post doesn’t compare it.

Noom Free vs MyFitnessPal Free

Noom has a free version, and a paid account moves to it when the subscription ends. It includes select lessons and step tracking. Food logging on the free version is only in the US, by photo or voice. And only the foods with the fewest calories per gram, such as vegetables, count toward its daily goal. The full food log, the barcode scanner and the daily lessons need Noom Weight.

MyFitnessPal’s free plan lets you search its whole database, log food and exercise, save your own foods and recipes, and set calorie and macro goals by percentage. It shows ads. Its barcode scanner has needed Premium since October 2022, and so have photo logging and data export.

If you only want to count calories for free, MyFitnessPal’s free plan does much more.

How much Noom and MyFitnessPal cost

Noom sells Noom Weight for any length from one month to twelve. Noom Weight costs $209.00 a year, or $70.00 a month. Longer plans cost less per month. Noom says your plan is personalized from its sign-up quiz, and that prices can vary with promotions and with where you sign up, so check the offer before you pay. Noom doesn’t publish the price of Premium coaching.

MyFitnessPal sells Premium by the month or by the year, and Premium+ by the year. Premium adds the barcode scanner, photo and voice logging, data export and the AI Coach, and removes the ads. Premium+ adds a meal planner. New members get a 7-day free trial.

At list price, MyFitnessPal Premium costs less than Noom Weight, by the month and by the year.

If Noom offers you a free trial, note the day it ends. Noom shows the trial’s terms when you sign up, but its terms of use say it won’t remind you before the trial ends or tell you when your paid subscription starts, unless the law requires it.

Calorie goals and food colors

Noom gives you a weight loss zone, a calorie range rather than one number. It comes from the Harris-Benedict equation, using your sex, age, height and starting weight. Eating near the bottom of the range aims for one to two pounds a week, and near the top about half a pound. When you log exercise or steps, Noom adds back half of the calories you burn. It says people often eat more than they burn after exercise.

Then there are the colors. Noom rates each food by how many calories it packs per gram. Spinach, broccoli and grilled chicken are green, avocado and black beans are yellow, and nuts, oils and cookies are orange. Noom says the goal isn’t to avoid orange foods, but to balance them with foods that fill you up.

MyFitnessPal sets your calorie goal from your profile and the weekly rate you choose. It offers to recalculate the goal each time you lose ten pounds. When you log exercise, it raises that day’s goal. Premium lets you set different goals by day or by meal.

Macros and nutrients

Noom shows calories and colors by default. Macro tracking for protein, carbs and fat is a setting you turn on, and advanced tracking adds fiber, sodium, sugars, saturated fat, calcium and potassium. You can set your own targets for each.

MyFitnessPal’s free plan sets macro goals by percentage. Premium sets them in grams and adds “deeper nutrition breakdowns”, though MyFitnessPal doesn’t say how many nutrients it tracks.

Photo, voice and barcode logging

Both apps put these in the paid plan, with one exception. In the US, Noom Free logs food by photo or voice, though only the foods with the fewest calories per gram count toward its goal. Noom Weight’s Scan Meal identifies the ingredients and portions in a photo, and Describe Meal does the same from what you type or say. You review the list, swap or edit anything wrong, and save. Noom Weight also has a barcode scanner.

MyFitnessPal’s Meal Scan suggests foods from its database, and you choose the right ones and set the servings. Voice Logging and the barcode scanner need Premium too.

The databases differ in size. Noom counts over 1 million foods, from the US, the UK, Australia, Canada and Germany. MyFitnessPal counts over 20.5 million, added by MyFitnessPal and its users. In MyFitnessPal, the same food can appear several times with different values, so pick an entry with a check mark when you can.

GLP-1 support

If you take a GLP-1 such as Ozempic or Zepbound, both apps have something for you. Noom’s GLP-1 Companion is free inside Noom Weight. It adds lessons and tools for managing side effects. MyFitnessPal’s GLP-1 tracking logs each dose, the injection site and side effects next to your food, with reminders. It’s in the US, and in Canada on iPhone.

Switching from Noom to MyFitnessPal

If you decide to leave Noom and join MyFitnessPal, there is no data import or integration between them. You’ll have to start your tracking journey from scratch. You can still request a copy of your Noom data, and Noom says it typically sends it within 30 days.

Going the other way is the same. MyFitnessPal’s export needs Premium and holds the totals for each meal, and Noom’s help center describes no way to bring in a food log.

Where Fit Shapes fits

Fit Shapes is a tracker, like MyFitnessPal. It has no lessons and no coach, so if those are what help you, Noom is the better fit.

If you want the log, both apps leave gaps. Noom’s calorie range comes from your starting weight, and MyFitnessPal’s goal from a formula it runs again every ten pounds. Neither checks the formula against what actually happens. Fit Shapes does. Each week, Adaptive Targets compares what you eat with how your weight moves, and proposes a new set of targets, macros included. A photo logs the meal instantly, and every subscription includes photo, voice and barcode logging. It has no ads and doesn’t sell your data. It imports your data from MyFitnessPal, though not from Noom. So if you’re switching from MyFitnessPal, you can bring your history with you.

The catch is that Fit Shapes has no free plan. After the 14-day free trial, you pay for a subscription.

Questions

Is Noom better than MyFitnessPal?

Neither is better for everyone. Noom suits you if you want daily lessons on habits and the option of a coach. MyFitnessPal suits you if you mainly want to log food, want a free plan that does more, or want to log on the web.

Is Noom free?

Partly. Noom’s free version has select lessons and step tracking. In the US, it logs food by photo or voice, but only the foods with the fewest calories per gram, such as vegetables, count toward its goal. The full food log, the barcode scanner and the daily lessons need Noom’s paid plan, Noom Weight.

How much does Noom cost?

At list price, Noom’s paid plan, Noom Weight, costs $209.00 a year or $70.00 a month, with plans of every length in between. Your offer can differ, since Noom personalizes plans from its sign-up quiz. A one-on-one coach costs extra, and Noom doesn’t publish that price. Noom Med, its GLP-1 program, is separate and has its own prices.

Is Noom worth it?

It depends on what you need from it. Noom’s paid plan, Noom Weight, pays for a course. You get daily lessons on habits and the psychology of eating, a food log, a weight graph, and an AI chat for questions. A one-on-one coach costs extra.

It’s worth it if you’ve counted calories before and your habits are what trip you up, and you want something to read each day. It’s harder to justify if you already know how to count calories and just want the log. MyFitnessPal’s free plan lets you search its whole database and log food, and its Premium costs less than Noom Weight at list price.

If you start Noom with a free trial, note the day it ends. Noom’s terms say it won’t remind you before the first charge, unless the law requires it.

Is Noom or MyFitnessPal cheaper?

MyFitnessPal, at list price. It has a fuller free plan, and Premium costs $79.99 a year or $19.99 a month. Noom’s paid plan, Noom Weight, costs $209.00 a year or $70.00 a month, though Noom’s offers vary with its quiz.

Does Noom or MyFitnessPal have a free barcode scanner?

Neither. Noom’s scanner needs its paid plan, Noom Weight, and MyFitnessPal’s has needed Premium since October 2022.

Is Noom or MyFitnessPal better if I take a GLP-1?

Both have GLP-1 features. Noom’s GLP-1 Companion adds lessons and tools for side effects, free with Noom’s paid plan. MyFitnessPal logs your doses, injection sites and side effects next to your food. If you want a prescription too, Noom Med is a separate telehealth program.

Can I move my Noom history to MyFitnessPal?

No. Noom sends your data only on request, typically within 30 days, and MyFitnessPal describes no import from other apps. If you switch, you start your log again.
