Cronometer and Lose It! both have a free plan, both run on iPhone, Android and the web, and both let you export all your data for free. Past that, they want different things from you. Lose It! is built around a daily calorie goal that it sets and moves for you. Cronometer is built around nutrients. It tracks more of them, from lab-analyzed food data, and leaves the targets to you.
What the free plans include
Cronometer’s free plan, Basic, includes the barcode scanner, up to 84 nutrients, and custom targets for macros and micronutrients. It syncs with activity trackers and exports all your data. Its reports cover 7 days.
Lose It!’s free plan, Basic, gives you a daily calorie goal and the food database. Nutrient goals, macros included, need Premium. Lose It! is also moving its barcode and nutrition label scanners to Premium. During the change, some free members still have the scanners and others do not.
Both free plans show ads. Lose It! sells a one-time purchase that removes its banner and full-screen ads.
Cronometer Gold vs Lose It! Premium
Cronometer sells Gold by the month or by the year. In the US, Gold costs $59.99 a year, or $10.99 a month. Gold removes the ads and adds photo and voice logging, longer reports, and a macro scheduler.
Lose It! sells Premium by the year, or Lifetime, a single payment that unlocks Premium for good. Premium costs $79.99 a year. Lifetime costs $299.99 once. Its prices also vary. Lose It! adjusts them “based on various factors like seasonal promotions and how often you use the app”, so check the price in the app before you pay.
At list price, a year of Cronometer Gold costs less than a year of Lose It! Premium.
Micronutrient tracking
If you track vitamins and minerals, Cronometer is built for it. It tracks up to 84 nutrients on Basic, and more on Gold, each with a target you can set.
Lose It! Premium lets you set goals for eight nutrients, among them protein, carbohydrate, fat, fiber and sodium. Lose It! also shows 18 more nutrients, such as vitamin C, iron and potassium, on nutrition labels and in meal summaries. You cannot set goals for those 18.
Food database accuracy
Cronometer says its foods come from lab-analyzed sources, such as the NCCDB, the USDA’s SR28, and the Canadian Nutrient File, “not crowd-sourced guesses”. Every food submitted to it goes through a verification process. It has more than 1 million foods.
Lose It!’s foods come from the USDA, from its members, and from its own team. The team verifies popular foods that members add, and marks them with a green check. Lose It!’s App Store listing counts over 50 million “items and recipes”, so you’re more likely to find the exact branded food you ate. Because members add foods, the same food can appear several times with different values. Check the entry you choose, or pick one with a check.
Calorie goals: a formula or your own
Lose It! sets your daily calorie goal from your weight, height, age, sex and activity level, then takes away 250 to 1,000 calories a day for the weekly rate you choose. As you log weight loss, it adjusts the goal gradually. Your macro goals do not change with it, so you update them yourself.
Cronometer lets you set your own target for each macro and nutrient, on the free plan, and they stay where you put them. Gold’s macro scheduler sets different macro targets for each day of the week.
Photo and voice logging
Both apps put photo and voice logging in the paid plan, and both work the same way. The app suggests foods from its database, and you check them before you log. Cronometer’s Photo Log and Voice Logging are in Gold. Lose It!’s Snap It and Say It are in Premium, and Snap It suggests a serving for each food too.
Watches, trackers and health data
Cronometer syncs with activity trackers on the free plan, among them Garmin, Oura, WHOOP and Fitbit, as well as Apple Health and Health Connect. On the free plan, Lose It! reads the calories you burn from an Apple Watch. Syncing with other smartwatches and fitness trackers needs Premium.
Cronometer also keeps health data beside your food. You can add readings such as blood glucose and ketones to your diary, or import them from a Dexcom glucose monitor or a Keto-Mojo meter. Gold adds a fasting timer and more charts, among them glucose. Lose It! Premium lets you log blood glucose and blood pressure as custom goals. If you eat keto or watch your blood sugar, Cronometer puts more of your readings next to your meals.
Switching apps and exporting your data
Neither app can import your food log from another app. Lose It! says “importing data is not possible”, and Cronometer’s help center describes no way to bring in a diary. If you switch, you start your log again.
Both let you take your data out. Each exports all of it as CSV files, on any plan.
Where Fit Shapes fits
Both apps leave gaps. Photo and voice logging need a paid plan, and even then you check a list of foods before the meal is logged. Lose It!’s macro goals stay put when its calorie goal moves, and Cronometer leaves every target to you. The free plans show ads, and neither app can import your food log from another app.
Fit Shapes takes a little from each. Like Lose It!, it moves your calorie goal for you. But it learns from what you eat as well as what you weigh, and your macros move with it. Each week, Adaptive Targets proposes a new set. Like Cronometer, it tracks vitamins and minerals, not only calories. A photo logs the meal instantly, and every subscription includes photo, voice and barcode logging. It has no ads and doesn’t sell your data. It also imports your data from Cronometer and Lose It!. So if you decide to switch, you can bring your history with you.
The catch is that Fit Shapes has no free plan, while Cronometer’s free plan includes barcode scanning and detailed nutrients. After the 14-day free trial, you pay for a subscription.
Questions
Is Cronometer better than Lose It!?
Neither is better for everyone. Cronometer suits you if you want a free barcode scanner and the most nutrient detail. Lose It! suits you if you want a calorie goal that moves as you lose weight, or the bigger food database.
Is Cronometer or Lose It! cheaper?
Both have a free plan. Cronometer Gold costs $59.99 a year or $10.99 a month. Lose It! Premium costs $79.99 a year, and Lifetime $299.99 once, though Lose It! adjusts its prices by account.
Should I pay for Cronometer Gold or Lose It! Premium?
It depends on what you’d pay for. Cronometer’s free plan already has the barcode scanner and nutrient targets, so Gold mostly adds photo and voice logging, longer reports, and no ads. Lose It!’s free plan leaves out macro goals, and its barcode scanner is moving to Premium, so Premium unlocks more of the basics. At list price, a year of Gold costs less.
Does Cronometer or Lose It! have a free barcode scanner?
Cronometer does, on its free plan. Lose It! is moving its scanner to Premium, and some free members still have it during the change.
Is Cronometer or Lose It! more accurate?
We found no outside test that compares them. Cronometer’s foods come from lab-analyzed sources and go through verification. Lose It!’s include foods its members add, so the same food can appear with different values, and it marks the ones its team has verified.
Can Lose It! import my Cronometer diary?
No. Lose It! says importing data is not possible, and Cronometer describes no import from other apps either. Both export your data as CSV files.
